Not surprisingly, a plant wishing to survive the harsh desert climate must think “protection” first. This vegetation looks quite attractive from a distance, but a very close inspection reveals most of these plants have wicked defenses built in. These defenses scream leave me alone or be sorry you didn’t!
I’ve collected a few photos of an assortment of common desert plants that follow. I hope you’ll find them wicked, beautiful, and interesting in their own way.

Great pics of cool plants! If I had to choose a favorite it would be the good old fashioned Saguaro.

I agree Glenn. The one in the photo is about 10 feet tall and may be 25-30 yrs old.

I also favor the Saguaro. Maybe its from watching hundreds of episodes of Road Runner and Wyle E Coyote as a kid.

After this trip, in view of your great prose and photos, you can get a job with one of the country newspapers–Travels with Abby. It worked pretty well for John Steinbeck!
