Zion…Natural Beauty Beyond Description

Abby and I made an early morning visit to Zion National Park recently. After going through numerous comments, we found most recommended early morning or late afternoon visits to this extremely popular destination. We arrived at 7:30 local time after driving nearly 90 minutes from our BLM campground (yes, we found camping near Zion was packed as well).

Our first trip around the 231-square mile park was following the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway. That twisting, turning route provided outstanding views of vertical, multicolored canyon walls, flat-topped buttes, and peaks reaching up into the bright morning sunshine.

This route even includes a 1.1-mile long tunnel! Driving through it in the early morning sure makes one sit up and pay attention!

During the busiest months, March to December, the Canyon’s Scenic Drive is closed to most private vehicles. A fleet of free shuttles is provided, offering many stops along the nearly 30-mile route. Dogs are not allowed, but I did take a quick round trip myself. Abby wasn’t pleased, but I returned in less than two hours.

The astounding beauty found in Zion National Park must be seen in person to fully appreciate just how magnificent it is. Photos give you an idea, but your personal visit is highly encouraged.
